Beginning September 15, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will replace the current “duration of status” framework for J nonimmigrants with a fixed admission period. Exchange visitors who enter the United States or change to J status on or after that date will receive an Admit Until Date (AUD), which establishes the last day they are authorized to remain in J status. The admission period generally cannot exceed four years, plus up to 30 days for departure.
The AUD will generally be based on the program dates listed on Form DS-2019. Importantly, the new four-year limit applies to DHS admission and extension procedures and does not change the maximum program durations permitted under Department of State regulations. Sponsors may continue issuing DS-2019s for the full authorized period of a program, but a J-1 exchange visitor whose program extends beyond the AUD may need to request an extension of stay through USCIS or depart the United States and seek admission again with a valid DS-2019 and visa.
What this means for J-1 exchange visitors:
- Program sponsors will need to maintain accurate SEVIS records and, when appropriate, include an Expected Completion Date in the DS-2019 remarks section.
- Exchange visitors whose programs extend beyond their AUD may need to take action before continuing their stay.
- A shortened or terminated program can require departure earlier than the AUD, depending on the circumstances and the status of the SEVIS record.
INLG is monitoring the implementation of the new admission framework and can assist J-1 exchange visitors and program sponsors in evaluating how the changes may affect individual timelines, extensions, and immigration strategy
